To Build or Not to Build

A turbulent river separated two great lands. A woman from a village in one of the lands looked out over the water and realized that if she built a bridge to the other side of the river, all of the people from both sides could live as one. They could share in each other’s happiness, partake of each other’s talents and gifts, and even share the burdens of life. The woman began building a bridge. She was so excited and couldn’t wait for the day it would be finished. Each day she worked and even brought some of her family to help and they were glad to help. Everything seemed to be going so well, and she knew any day the bridge would be complete.

One day, she realized it seemed as if the bridge wasn’t going any further. Then she began to notice that, in fact, pieces of her bridge were in the waters below. It seemed as if someone or something was tearing it apart. How could that happen? When did it happen?

She decided to camp out overnight and see what she could see. Lo and behold, something was indeed happening. It turned out that the people from the other side of the bridge were tearing it apart. She was sad and disheartened. Why would they do that?

She went to bed that evening, not knowing what she could do. The next day she woke up, and it was clear to her. She packed her things and walked home. She never returned to that bridge but spent time building up her people. She shared in their happiness, supported their talents, and loved them in their struggles. She was content.

Lessons she learned:

To build a bridge; you have to have both sides working on the same thing.

Also, some people are willing to cross bridges that others will never want to cross.

Last, she learned to love the ones that love her and to let go of the people not meant for her.
